AUSTIN, Texas — A 2013 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta fetched $1.1 million at a weekend auction for Hurricane Sandy relief.
The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta — the first one of its kind in the U.S. — sold for almost four times the car's list price. But the Berlinetta didn't fetch as much as a rare Ferrari 599XX Evo that Ferrari put up for auction earlier this year to help earthquake victims in Italy. That car raised $1.78 million for relief efforts.
Ferrari said it has donated more than $1.5 million to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy relief. Ferrari said the F12 Berlinetta auction "yielded incredible results."
The winning bid for the F12 Berlinetta was placed by Larry Roth of Long Island, according to Ferrari. Bidding started at $315,888 — the car's base price — with the final bid reaching $1,125,000, the automaker said.
The F12 Berlinetta is the most powerful road car ever launched by Ferrari. It is set to go on sale in the U.S. in the second quarter.
The auction was held at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
